Hi! I'm Dr Jo Ross, a UK-based Occupational Therapist with nearly four decades of experience. Prior to my (semi-)retirement, I worked with children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neuro-developmental conditions, to help improve the skills needed for everyday life.
I am now sharing that knowledge online, free to anyone who may find it interesting or helpful. You can learn more about me and this site here.
The answer to the question of whether we can strengthen and develop skills for everyday life is a resounding 'YES, absolutely'! We know that the brain is malleable and adaptable. It constantly learns, adjusts, and forms new patterns and brain 'pathways', particularly in children and young people. Scientists call this growth 'neuroplasticity'.
By applying our own 'brain skills know-how' in daily family life we can support our child to make progress, move forwards, and thrive as a unique human being.
No one size strategy or therapy technique fits all, and so creativity can help to discover what works for your individual child. Keep exploring and looking for the best ways to help them thrive, succeed, and be their best self.
Every time your child masters something they couldn't do before, however small the accomplishment, they have 'grown' their skills.
A neuro-different child's responses can be perplexing. Frustrating. Confusing. Upsetting. Even scary. Getting a good grasp of your child's personal 'mix' of strengths and challenges is an essential starting point.
Untangling and understanding a child's 'brain skills' allows us to tailor and target our own responses. We can begin to introduce more precise ways of helping them to learn to successfully manage their day to day life demands more easily. We can figure out how to 'grow' specific skills.
